This picture was taken from the first-floor dining area but at night, they open a rooftop bar that offers even more spectacular nighttime views of Wat Arun. ![]() Located almost directly across the river from Wat Arun, Rongros boasts one of the best views of this famous Bangkok landmark. Located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, Rongros serves delicious food but there’s something else that they’re known for. It’s delicious with the roti but be sure to order some jasmine rice to go with it. This classic Thai dish is one of my favorites. What makes the version at Rongros different is that it’s served with ultra-flaky roti that you can dip into the curry sauce, much like Indian curries. At Rongros, they serve it with fresh dill, cucumber slices, roasted peanuts, and loads of fried garlic.įor our main course, we shared this pot of Thai green curry which you can get with either chicken (pictured below) or New Zealand ribeye. Like sai oua, sai krok isan is one of our favorite snacks in Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai. Made with a mixture of pork, sticky rice, garlic, and salt, it’s a tasty street food snack that’s commonly served with raw cabbage and bird’s eye chilis. Sai krok isan literally means “Isan sausage” and refers to a tangy fermented sausage popular in northeastern Thailand. This bowl of sai krok isan is another chef-recommended dish at Rongros. We love tod mun pla and had it several times on our most recent trip to Bangkok. Made with clown featherback fish, it’s topped with crispy fried basil and served with a peanut-based dipping sauce. ![]() We went with two of the chef-recommended dishes, starting with this tasty tod mun pla or Thai spiced fishcakes. That’s an absolute bargain, especially when you see the view from this restaurant. ![]() We ordered three dishes and two beers and our bill came out to just THB 1,213, which at today’s exchange rate translates to a little over USD 35. Rongros is proof that Michelin-starred meals don’t have to cost you an arm and a leg in Bangkok. Rongros (Our Favorite Restaurant for Traditional Thai Food) This scenery was recounted in at least two poems by Sunthorn Phu (1786–1855), a poet of that era, who was born in Bangkok Noi.THE BEST RESTAURANTS IN BANGKOK 1. In the early- Rattanakosin period, there was a floating market where vendor's boats and wooden houseboats mingled, lining up along the waterways to Bang Bamru and Bang Khun Non. Eventually, the river diverted through the new canal, and its old course became the two canals known today as Khlong Bangkok Yai and Khlong Bangkok Noi. As time passed, the new canal was eroded and became gradually wider. In 1552, during the reign of King Chairachathirat of the Ayutthaya Kingdom, he ordered the construction of a canal bypassing the meander to shorten travel time, known as Khlong Lat Bangkok (คลองลัดบางกอก 'Bangkok Short-Cut Canal'). The canal, along with its counterpart Khlong Bangkok Yai, was initially a meandering part of the Chao Praya River's original course. The canal terminates at the confluence with Khlong Om Non and Khlong Bang Yai at the Old Bang Yai Market in Bang Yai District, Nonthaburi Province, along the way, it is also connected to many canals, such as Khlong Chak Phra, Khlong Maha Sawat, Khlong Bang Kruai.įor this reason it has been promoted as one of the cultural tourism routes, as well as other canals in Bangkok and the vicinity. The current flows north through many historical and cultural landmarks, such as Ansorissunnah Royal Mosque, National Museum of Royal Barges, Wat Suwannaram, Thon Buri railway station, Wat Amarintharam, and Wat Si Sudaram, a Thai temple known as the place where the poet Sunthorn Phu studied in his childhood, as well as Wat Bang Oi Chang in Nonthaburi Province, etc. The mouth of Khlong Bangkok Noi is located beside Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun Hospital (SiPH) and the former Bangkok Noi railway station (now the location of Thonburi Railway Station Pier). Khlong Bangkok Noi ( Thai: คลองบางกอกน้อย, pronounced lit 'Small Bangkok Canal') is a khlong (คลอง canal) in Bangkok its name is the origin of the name Bangkok Noi District. ![]() Khlong Bangkok Noi near Wat Sri Sudaram A map showing Chao Praya river's original course and its shortcut canals.
